Brain Health
The other day a friend of mine asked me about taking Ginko Biloba to improve her memory. Even though I think herbs used properly and with the advice of a professional can be of great benefit, I do not think my friend should use them to improve her memory just yet. While she is fit and exercises several time a week she eats a pretty Standard American Diet, SAD. I told her there are a few things she should do first that would probably yield better results for less money. Omega-3 60% of the brain is made up of fat. Among these is the omega-3 essential fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). If someone eats a SAD … Read entire article »
Chocolate Omega 3 Balls
Of all the health food or protein bars available one of the best is the Larabar . I like their chocolate bar, it is made with nuts and coconut, sweetened with dates, and has no added sugars. The price at my local health food store is close to $4.00. When I saw the ingredients it reminded me of the raw cheese cake recipe in The Raw Truth. I figured that I could make something just as good for far less money. I formed them into balls and added flax and hemp oil so I call them chocolate omega 3 balls. These balls store very well in the freezer so my second attempt was a batch … Read entire article »
New Sunscreen Guidelines
Recently the FDA released new guidelines for sunscreen manufactures. I say they haven’t gone far enough. With new concerns about the safety of sunscreens, and the abundance of recent studies showing the health benefits of vitamin D I think it is time to severely restrict the chemicals allowed in sunscreens and other lotions. I know that is not going to happen anytime soon. I hope that in my lifetime we will see the light and be much more restrictive about the chemicals we allow in contact with our bodies. Recently I wrote about how beta-caroteneprotects the skin. This spring after drinking carrot juice and taking astaxanthan (another carotenoid) all winter I did some gardening for an … Read entire article »
Mosquito season is Here
Mark’s Daily Apple has some natural suggestions for repellent. Here is what he has to say about the most popular chemical repellent. In the U.S., DEET remains the repellent of choice, but there’s plenty of reason to choose otherwise. Transdermal absorption of DEET in studies has ranged from 5-17% in humans, and absorption continues as long as the product remains on the skin. DEET has been linked to some fatalities in children who received multiple and extensive applications. It has also been identified as a neurotoxin, in that it inhibits the activity of cholinesterase, an enzyme of the central nervous system in both insects and mammals. A Duke University pharmacologist … Read entire article »
Vitamin D for Health
The correlation between serum blood levels of circulating vitamin D and lower risk from many cancer lines has been well documented over the past two decades. Scientists have revealed the mechanism used by this powerful pro-hormone to guide healthy DNA replication and cellular division to dramatically reduce the incidence of potentially deadly mutations. Publishing in the journal Anticancer Research, researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Creighton University School of Medicine have found that much higher levels of the sunshine vitamin are necessary to prevent or markedly reduce the incidence of breast cancer and other chronic conditions. Omega-3 Good For Inflammatory Bowel Diseases
In a study published online in the journal Clinical Nutrition, researchers have shown that DHA and EPA, oils found in fish oil (omega-3) reduce inflammation in rats colons and in colon cells in petri-dishes. While this is not groundbreaking research it further confirms that nutrition can improve and fix conditions previously treated only with pharmaceuticals. Corn, modern food production, and omega-3 There is a problem built into modern food production that makes us deficient in omega-3 fats. Omega-3 is made in plants and is particularly rich in green leaves and grasses. Humans can’t produce omega-3s neither can the animals we eat most often: cows, chickens, and pigs. Furthermore we can’t get enough omega-3 by eating plants rich … Read entire article »
Farmageddon Trailer
Here is a movie showing how the federal government is attacking producers of healthful and healthy food. The sad part about the feds actions is that they are preventing the advancement of food production. Some of the farmers featured produce food of such high quality their products are price six times higher than the junk sold by the large corporations. For examples look at the prices of free range chickens $3.79/lb, eggs $3-6/dozen and beef is regularly bought for over $20/lb. People don’t pay these prices because they are being duped, there is a real quality difference. An easy way to see for yourself is to go to a farmers market, premium grocery store or … Read entire article »
